London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport

Located about 56 kilometers outside of London, London Luton Airport LTN/EGGW is the fourth largest airport in the London area and is home to many European low cost and budget airlines. In 2010, the airport served over eight million passengers, making it the fifth busiest airport in the United Kingdom. Most flights at London Luton are headed to cities throughout Europe, with a few flights headed to North Africa. The airport has a single runway that is about 2,160 meters long, with plans to extend the runway to 3,000 meters, which will allow the airport to handle larger aircraft. Extending the runway will also help minimize delays, as a longer runway will give the airplanes landing at and departing from London Luton more space, as well as help minimize runway taxi.

The airport is a hub for Ryanair, EasyJet, Thomson Airways, and Monarch Airlines. It is also served by a number of other low cost and budget carriers, including AerArann, an Irish airline, Blue Air, a Romanian airline, EL AL, an Israeli airline, Flybe, a United Kingdom airline, and Wizz Air, a Central and Eastern European airline.

London Luton Airport can be reached by train, coach, or car. There are several car parks on the airport premises for visitors driving in from throughout the United Kingdom. The airport is located just off the M1 motorway, which runs south towards London and north towards Leeds and connects with the M25 motorway. For visitors wishing to take the train to arrive at or depart from London Luton, the Luton Airport Parkway, built-in 1999, serves the Midland Main Line that goes to London's St. Pancras Station. The primary operator of trains on this route is First Capital Connect. East Midlands Trains also operates trains headed to London, in addition to other cities such as Kettering, Leicester, and Nottingham. Local buses provide service from the airport to the Luton town center, and companies such as Green Line Coaches and EasyBus offer services to London.

London Luton Airport is also well known due to two television series, Luton Airport chronicled the daily life of employees of easyJet at Luton, as the airport is the airline's hub. London Luton Airport Series; followed airport employees through phases of redevelopment at the airport, while not focusing on any particular airline.
